March Membership Spotlight: Emily Aertker

Emily Aertker is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, majoring in Communication Studies with Public Relations and Organizational Communication Concentrations. This is her first year being a NeW member!

How did you first hear about NeW?
"I first heard about NeW at a College Republicans meeting in the fall of 2018."

What made you want to become involved in NeW?
"Coming to a liberal campus, it can be difficult connecting with like-minded people. In the midst of an emerging fourth wave of feminism, it is paramount to see how far we have come and recognized how far societal pressures have shifted the views of modern feminists. It is crucial to have a cornerstone in traditional feminist ideologies, and I was very excited to discover other women who shared my similar passions."

What is your all-time favorite NeW event you’ve attended?
"Campus Forum was my all time favorite NeW event. We were able to network with other organizations from universities and diffuse ideas to spread the conservative message. We were able to hear how to improve our organization, increase measures of outreach, and find support and resources from other sponsors and institutions. It was a great bonding experience for the members at NeW and other politically affiliated clubs all while representing UNC Charlotte."

Describe NeW in one word and tell us why you chose that word.
"Genuine. I chose this word because the members of NeW have always treated me with respect and have been very open about their mission to remain non-partisan. No matter how politicized our climate can get, the members are always very understanding, responsive, and strive to expand diversity on an intellectual level authentically. They share their personal views on certain issues, and some individuals may not agree. However, we always appreciate each others’ differences and do our best to examine things from varying perspectives because we recognize the importance and value of having difficult discussions. We all want similar things in our lives, we just have different ways of going about achieving them."
