Importance of Appearance

How much thought do you put into your appearance when you're heading to a professional setting? Have you realized that your appearance is connected to your attitude and confidence, impacting your overall success? Research has shown that ”clothing 'systematically influences wearers’ psychological processes.” This simply means that you will act smarter and more professionally if you feel like you are dressed more professionally and smarter.

Matthew Randall, executive director of the Center for Professional Excellence at York College of Pennsylvania shared with The Reading Eagle, "How an individual dresses for work can be a powerful extension of his personal brand. Clothes, accessories and even the footwear an employee chooses to wear help to reinforce or diminish his skills and qualities in the eyes of his employer, co-workers and clients."

It may seem like caring about your appearance is mostly just so other people will take you seriously. However, it also benefits you! Your appearance affects your attitude and gives you a boost of self-confidence. Your self-perception also impacts how others perceive you. When we feel good about your outward appearance, you are more likely to feel good inwardly. This gives you a better attitude and a greater self-confidence and you're likely to be more productive, leading to an overall high performance.

The Network of enlightened Women Chapter at UNC Charlotte recently hosted a Professional Pizza Party featuring guest speaker Heather Pfitzenmaier, NeW National's Vice President. She shared key tips on how students can have a successful professional debut and a make stellar first impression.  Now that you understand the importance of your appearance, let's take a look at the different types of attire you are likely to encounter during your professional journey as presented by Heather!

5 Levels of Business Attire

1. Baseline Casual

  • Comfortable, and informal. 

2. Business Casual (also known as mainstream causal)

3. Executive Causal 

  • Dressiest causal. 
  • Considered formal business clothing with a relaxed attitude. 

4. Traditional Business Professional

  • Formal with a pop of your personality by using more brightly colors.

5. Boardroom Formal 

  • More tailored
  • High-end
  • Conservative

Time to be Successful!

The first impression you have on someone will always lie in your appearance. Make sure you look like you care about how you present yourself, and know the dress code for every occasion. Use this guide to assist you in looking great and feeling confident everywhere you go. Your attitude and appearance is sure to give you an edge in any professional setting.

Veteran’s Day is a day taken out of each year to focus on the true sacrifices individuals have made for our country. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Chapter of Network of enlightened Women paired up with the College Republicans on campus to raise awareness for a particular non-profit organization, The Independence Fund. The Independence Fund is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina whose mission is to empower severely wounded veterans and their caregivers by providing resources and tools to assist them with their physical, mental, and emotional wounds. They work tirelessly to ensure veterans are able to regain their independence through their Mobility Program. This specific program provides all-terrain mobility devices to ensure that veterans can continue their daily routines. Jasmine Alvarez is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte majoring in Psychology. This is her first semester in Charlotte, but she is already quite active with NeW! How did you first hear about NeW? "I first heard about NeW through Jessica Martinez, who is a really great friend of mine. She encouraged me to go to the National Conference." What made you want to become involved in NeW? "What made me want to be involved in NeW was after going to the National Conference in DC in June 2018.
