Gift Yourself a LinkedIn
As the Holiday season draws near, gifts are bought, wrapped, and given. While thinking of others, don’t fully neglect to think about yourself. December is also a time of reflection and preparation for the upcoming year. This year, consider giving yourself a new source of networking and job hunting - a LinkedIn profile.
Free of charge, LinkedIn is often referred to a “professional Facebook”. While that is true, it is also used to build business connections and give a more detailed look of your resume. Connecting with friends, former teachers / professors, and bosses allows your professional social network to grow. If using the LinkedIn Jobs application, you can see how many alumni or connections work there. Having that extra boost in numbers allows you to reach out for recommendations or have any questions answered if need be.
Moving from a personal to professional scope, LinkedIn offers a great deal of information on all of it’s pages. Businesses use LinkedIn as a way to inform the public and lead them to their websites. With constant press releases, businesses allow a transparent view into their company. Keeping up with businesses’ current events, you can see how companies are impacted by the world around them. When looking for a job or internship, it is crucial to be aware of their past, present, and future.
Being a more “behind the scenes news network”, LinkedIn users are educated by a more direct news source. Allowing you to keep up with your favorite companies and nonprofits, you gain a more sturdy knowledge of what is going on in the world around you. Majority of the time, businesses and corporations like to keep their names out of the news, but want the public to be aware of what they are doing. LinkedIn is great in that sense!
When you are thinking about gift giving and have a few extra minutes, go ahead and make yourself a LinkedIn page. If you have one already, give it a little update! Don’t be shy when making those connections, following those businesses, and [politely] bragging about those internships you’ve had.
